The "zMEC Edge Computing and 5G AIoT Integration Practice Workshop," jointly organized by Z-COM Inc. and the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (CEECS) at Feng Chia University (FCU), was successfully held on January 8th at Room 29, B1F, Information and Electrical Engineering Building at Feng Chia University. Dean Chu-Wang Shen of the CEECS was invited to deliver the opening remarks. During his speech, Dean Shen emphasized that in the era of rapid 5G and AI development, only through deep industry-academia collaboration can theory be effectively put into practice. He also encouraged the more than 20 participating faculty members and students to seize this opportunity to master the core competitiveness of edge computing. The event attracted numerous professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students from the CEECS, with a total of 20 participants successfully completing the intensive practical training and receiving their certificates.

Deep Industry-Academia Integration, Practicing zMEC Edge Energy
This workshop broke away from traditional one-way teaching by adopting a teacher-student team-based model, emphasizing collaborative learning and practical cooperation. The training focused on Z-COM’s self-developed zMEC (Edge Computing Platform). Instructors explored contemporary network deployment and management architectures in depth and demonstrated how to use 5G Gateways as a core hub to efficiently collect data from various AIoT sensors. In the afternoon session, participants tackled Docker containerization practices, packaging and deploying creative applications onto the zMEC platform.

Student Creativity Explosion: From Green Buildings to UAV Air Pollution Monitoring
During the result presentation session, FCU faculty and students showcased their deep technical foundations and imaginative ideas. Several teams proposed solutions with significant commercial potential for real-world scenarios:
• "Smart Green Building Lighting Evaluation System": Students used sensors to collect real-time light sensitivity data from various corners of a building. This data was transmitted through a Z-COM Gateway to the zMEC edge for analysis to accurately evaluate lighting efficiency and automatically adjust lighting for maximum energy savings.
• "Soil Temperature and Humidity Monitoring and Warning System": Targeting smart agriculture needs, this solution uses sensors to monitor soil temperature and humidity. An alarm system is triggered if data exceeds a set threshold. Through zMEC's real-time processing, farm managers can immediately grasp environmental changes and prevent crop damage.
• "Air Quality Monitoring Series": Students demonstrated high creativity in addressing air pollution by designing three monitoring modes: stationary, planar (2D), and spatial (3D):
o Stationary Environmental Monitoring: Monitors the proportion of harmful substances in specific surrounding environments and outputs the data in real-time to large billboards to remind nearby people and vehicles of the current air quality index.
o 2D Planar Mobile Monitoring (ESG Integrated Application): Deploys monitoring equipment on mobile carriers to detect regional carbon emissions. This system emphasizes hardware-software integration, with data connecting to an Energy Management System (EMS) to generate ESG reports, helping companies implement sustainable management.
o 3D Spatial Mobile Monitoring (UAV Technology): Sensors are mounted on UAVs, using the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G to return mobile air quality data to the zMEC edge for processing. This architecture can quickly identify pollution sources in wide-area spaces, demonstrating the advantages of edge computing in environmental governance.
Z-COM: Deepening Ties with Campuses, Nurturing Future Tech Talent
Z-COM stated that the practical depth shown by the FCU CEECS students was impressive. By bringing industry-standard 5G Gateways and the zMEC platform into the classroom, students moved from "theory on paper" to "actual operation," truly mastering the core logic of Docker deployment and edge computing. Such workshops allow students to access cutting-edge hardware and software architectures during their school years, effectively shortening the gap between academia and industry.
Participating professors also noted that such "hands-on operation" opportunities are extremely precious for students. Discussing architectures face-to-face with technical experts from Z-COM provides significant inspiration for students' future involvement in AIoT and edge computing.

At the end of the event, Z-COM representatives presented "Z-COM AIoT Smart Sensing Product Application Training Certificates" to 20 faculty members and students and awarded five major technical prizes, bringing this technology-filled industry-academia event to a perfect close.
