Advancing Sustainable Development through Employee Engagement, Environmental Education, and Community Collaboration
Event Background
As part of its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation, Z-COM recently joined government agencies, academic experts, ecological volunteers, and local partners in the Xiangshan Wetland Habitat Restoration ESG Initiative.
Organized by Z-COM's Sustainability Management Department, the program featured a series of activities, including the removal of invasive species, environmental education sessions, upcycling workshops, and community engagement initiatives. Through these hands-on efforts, Z-COM transformed its sustainability commitments into meaningful action, contributing to ecological restoration while fostering greater environmental awareness and collaboration among stakeholders.

Ecological Education and Habitat Restoration
educational sessions led by Professor Hsiao-Yun Chang of Asia University and Professor Chih-Liang Chao of National Tsing Hua University. Participants were introduced to the unique ecological characteristics of the Xiangshan Wetlands, the habitat changes affecting Taiwan's endemic fiddler crab populations, and the environmental impact of the invasive species Sesuvium portulacastrum on intertidal ecosystems.
Through expert insights and on-site observations, employees and their family members gained a deeper understanding of the fragility of wetland ecosystems and the importance of biodiversity conservation. The program highlighted the critical role that habitat restoration plays in maintaining ecological balance and preserving valuable natural resources for future generations.

During the habitat restoration activities, participants worked together under challenging conditions, including high temperatures and muddy terrain, to carefully remove invasive Sesuvium portulacastrum plants and transport the collected biomass for disposal. Because of the species’ strong regenerative capacity, incomplete removal can allow it to reestablish and spread, making thorough extraction essential. Volunteers and employees therefore approached the task with exceptional care and dedication.
Through these collective efforts, approximately 242 kilograms of invasive vegetation were removed. The restoration work helps recover the open mudflat habitats of the intertidal zone and improve living conditions for wetland species, including Taiwan's endemic fiddler crabs. By restoring native habitats, the initiative contributes to the long-term health and resilience of the Xiangshan Wetland ecosystem.

Upcycling Workshops and Community Cultural Engagement
In the afternoon, participants gathered at the Naluwan Community Learning Center for a series of hands-on upcycling workshops, including the creation of miniature ecosystem terrariums and decoupage crafts using recycled oyster shells.
Drawing on locally sourced materials such as recycled glass bottles, native plants, and oyster shells, the workshops integrated concepts of wetland ecology, circular resource utilization, and Xiangshan’s oyster-farming heritage into the creative process. Through these interactive experiences, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the interconnectedness between the local environment, cultural traditions, and biodiversity conservation.
The activities also highlighted the value of sustainable resource use and community engagement, demonstrating how environmental stewardship can be promoted through education, creativity, and collaboration.

Employee Care and Family Learning
Z-COM placed particular emphasis on participant well-being throughout the event by providing rest areas, drinking water, and opportunities for shared meals and exchange. These arrangements ensured that all participants could take part in the activities in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment.
Employees’ family members and children also actively joined the habitat restoration work, demonstrating that sustainability is not only a corporate practice, but also a shared learning journey that can be embraced by families and integrated into everyday life.

Cultivating Local Connections through Sustainable Action
Corporate sustainability extends beyond policies and frameworks—it requires meaningful action that connects businesses, employees, families, and local communities. By integrating employee engagement, environmental education, habitat restoration, and community participation, this initiative not only contributed to the restoration of the Xiangshan Wetlands but also strengthened participants’ understanding of biodiversity conservation and local sustainability issues.
Looking ahead, Z-COM will continue to advance sustainability through cross-sector collaboration and hands-on initiatives. By embedding corporate social responsibility into daily operations and community engagement efforts, the company remains committed to creating long-term value for society and the environment while working alongside employees, local communities, and stakeholders toward a more sustainable future.
